"Riding in Grandpa's Velie IN 1923, our family drove my grandfather's 1923 Velie touring car from New Hampshire to Florida. That's me (above) in a black taffeta dress with my grandparents and Grandpa's car, which had isinglass windows that could be rolled up and down. Our route through Georgia was difficult. The roads were being paved by men from local prisons wearing black-and-white-checked uniforms and chains around their ankles. In Bradenton, Florida, Grandfather and I were driving on a bridge over the Manatee River and I leaned against the passenger door, which flew open.
