This rare complete chess set w/original carved resin chessboard dates to 1979. Based on my research, this is the Kingmaker set. It was licensed by the Tolkien family. I love the substantial size of these pieces - the tallest is over 5"! The “white” characters are (I think) Gandalf the Wizard, the elves Legolas & Galadriel, Aragorn (Strider), Gimli the dwarf, Boromir, Treebeard maybe & a white tower (or 2 white towers). The pawns are Hobbits. The “Dark” characters are (I think) Saruman the White, Gollum of course, 2 horsed Ring Wraiths - one of which is The Witch King, Shelob the spider, Morgoth & 2 dark towers. The pawns are Orcs. Each chess piece is signed “© 1979 Tolkien Enterprises”. This is the ‘79 original - not the later set that came out in ‘88. Since this collector’s piece is 45 years old, it has a few dings as would be consistent with age. The felt on the back of the board shows some wear. There are a couple of nicks to the board - see pics. Saruman and Morgoth are missing their bottom felt. Three of the orcs show damage to the horns of their helmets & one of the horses has a tiny nick to its ear. Please see all pics and ask questions!
