Rare Antique Handmade Japanese Bunka Doll (ragdoll)
*HISTORY: The Japanese Bunka doll is a lost Art from the Taishô Period (1912-1926). Bunka Dolls (“bunka ningyō”) are considered unique and rare "rag dolls" meaning without wires so they cannot be posed. These sweet dolls, with their large round eyes and heart-shaped mouths, depicted Japanese children in Western dress. They differed from traditional Japanese dolls in that they were not made merely for display, but to play with and to cuddle.
*ONE OF A KIND HAND CRAFTED: Each Bunka Doll was handmade so they were uniquely one of a kind and their faces were hand-painted with a distinctive style featuring sweet large, expressive eyes. The body and clothing were made of Japanese fabric Chirimen, a type of creped silk with a textured finish.
STYLE: Bunka Doll clothing style was influenced by Western world dolls at the turn of the century with elements such as bonnets and dresses. This doll has a red bonnet and red dress with poppies
