Button set is from J. R. Gaunt & Son Ltd., London W1, England, and are stamped on front “Royal Chester Rowing Club, on back “Gaunt London.” Set is for a three-button jacket with two button cuffs, or fewer. The large brass or gold-plated buttons are7/8-inch diameter, and the small buttons about 9/16 diameter. Pre-owned, buttons were stored on a red velvet insert in the original box for so long that the buttons stuck to the velvet and became discolored on the backs and part of the rims. I tried cleaning them but was unable to remove all of the staining. A similar button set sold for $55 by Ruby Lane.
● J. R. Gaunt & Son were known as medalists', bronzists, silversmiths, enamellists, did die-stamping, and were manufacturers of badges, buttons, swords, and souvenirs. Business was founded in (or around) 1884 as J.R. Gaunt and Son when John Richard Gaunt and his eldest son, Charles Frederick (born 1864 in London), left their employment with the long-established London military button-makers, Firmin & Sons, to set up on their own business. One of their chief designers from the 1920s onwards was the sculptor, Edward Carter Preston. In 1899 Gaunt became a limited company and traded under that name until 1993, but in 2010 J.R. Gaunt & Son was re-established in London and Birmingham.
● You will receive your button set in the original box.
