'A Night on the Town' is Rod Stewart's seventh solo album, originally released in 1976 from Warner Bros. Records in the US. Produced by longtime collaborator Tom Dowd and split between studios in Los Angeles and Muscle Shoals.
The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section lays down supple grooves, while LA heavyweights like Joe Walsh and David Lindley drop in tasteful guitar licks.
The cover art is based on Renoir's painting Bal du moulin
de la Galette, with Stewart inserted in the center in period costume.
The album reached into the Top-5 in eight countries, including in #2 on the US Billboard 200 chart.
The lead single 'Tonight’s the Night' features a relaxed shuffle and risqué lyrics that made it a nine-week #1 hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The second single, a 1960s folk classic from Cat Stevens, 'The First Cut Is the Deepest' peaked at #21 in the US. It's "B-side" single, 'I Don't Want to Talk About It' made it to #44 on the US Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.
The album was ultimately certified 2× Platinum in the US.
