Bob Welch, the talented pitcher who graced the Los Angeles Dodgers during their 1978 season, left an indelible mark on baseball history. Although he isn’t part of the Baseball Hall of Fame, his journey and accomplishments deserve recognition. As a 21-year-old rookie, Welch gained national fame during the 1978 World Series. In Game 2 of that series, he faced the formidable Reggie Jackson of the New York Yankees with two men on base and two outs in the top of the ninth inning. Welch’s clutch performance included striking out Jackson. On May 29, 1980, he pitched a one-hitter against the Atlanta Braves, facing the minimum 27 batters. In 1990, he won the American League Cy Young Award as the league’s best pitcher. His impressive season included 27 wins, a feat not matched by any major league pitcher since.
