@shanagoebel good morning! You'll need to twist the top off in order to remove it. Then, add a few drops of oil to the cotton before replacing the top and twisting it on tightly until you see a red light. The light is your signal that it is on and it will start producing the smell through the hole on the side of the item. Hope that helps.
