Please please please do some research before paying high prices for non-authentic Spell. There are many out there, and several on posh. Don't fall for the scams and have to deal with the annoyance of opening a case. You deserve the real thing for these prices.
The real Gypsy Dancer dress directly from Spell is 100% Viscose. They do not create garments out of polyester.

Folk Town dresses will always be made in Indonesia, never China.

@iamgeni thank you for this! 💕Ugh!😫 I'm fairly new to Spell and saw that polyester gypsy gown and thought.. "Wow, Spell has polyester dresses?" SO INTIMIDATING, these fakes! I can't even see what you are showcasing on the fakes in the pics of the pink and purple fabric and the pearl HP.. 😭 maybe best to buy direct or from official resellers...
Mar 11Reply

iamgeni
@warriorgirlca Direct is always best, but sadly, most of the replicas are of older hard-to-find styles, which is why so many scammers are getting away with it. For the fake blossom Folk Town, the bottom row of flowers/vines are cut off at the bottom right above the bust piping. That's the easiest way to determine it is fake. And the back hem of the HP castaway should always come down to a point - should never be straight across. 💕

iamgeni
Ladies, I advise that everyone join the Facebook group "Spell Designs Fake Help and Identification." A lot of research has been done by the admin, even speaking directly to Spell. There are tons of photos, and you can post photos of items before you buy and a caring community of girls will help you make the best decision. 💘
Mar 11Reply

warriorgirlca
@iamgeni thanks so much. I just checked my HP bluebird gown, the only thing I had not purchased at spell online (I bought on eBay for $285 US a little over a month ago) and it is a fake. I'm crushed. 😥
Mar 11Reply

iamgeni
@warriorgirlca Oh no. I am so so sorry. You still may be able to open a claim via eBay or Pal to get your $$ back. 😭
Mar 11Reply

alohaanniecruz
@iamgeni thanks so much for this!! I can't believe it. I bought the Folk town purple dress on EBay and the seller promised it was 100% authentic. But the flowers are cut off. I am so so mad now. Now I know to be on the lookout. I can't believe someone directly lied to me. That is so unfair!!! 🙁🙁🙁thanks for posting
Mar 11Reply

iamgeni
@alohaanniecruz I am so so sorry. 😭 Sometimes, I do believe that a seller may have unknowingly purchased the fake herself. But there are definitely scammers who are doing it on purpose, too. I hope you can make a claim to get your money back. Does the care tag say "made in China" too?
Mar 11Reply

myliljulian
@iamgeni thank you. I just asked her to see if she's honest with me let's see what she say. Thank goddess I didn't have wifi till now cos I'm out of the country and just logged in now saw ur message. Good save! 😉
Mar 11Reply

myliljulian
@iamgeni she just wrote me back that it's 100% real
Mar 11Reply

iamgeni
@myliljulian She says that every time. When some of us have questioned it, she deleted the listing, blocked us, and reposted to remove the comments. If you look at the HP bell sleeve dress she sold, the tags match my fake comparison above. Go to the Spell site and look at the product details for this dress - it should be 100% viscose. 😬
Mar 11Reply

myliljulian
@iamgeni thank you 😊 I'll just take ur word for it. Also there is a skirt in about to purchase on pay p a l can u take a look at it and tell me if it's real? NWT Folk Town Maxi Skirt from Spell The sellers name is mosh underscore park.
Mar 11Reply

alohaanniecruz
@iamgeni omg yes!! Made in China. The seller said it was 100% genuine she got it from the Spell factory. I should have been questioning at that point
Mar 11Reply

iamgeni
@myliljulian That looks authentic to me. I haven't seen a fake FT skirt before. And it's made in Indonesia, so that's good! She is part of our US FB group, too. 💕

Hi there! Thank you for this informative post 😘😊 I've purchased from here and from the site directly and some of the items that come directly from spell have made in China tags 🤔 I recently started keeping my purchase slips in case I ever want to resell 😊 just a thought for everyone else too 😊 this way authenticity can be proven 😊 thanks again!
Mar 11Reply

@denimlover2011 Yep! Hotel Paradiso, for example, is made in China. Keeping proof of purchase is a fantastic idea! 😘

Wow. I didn't even realize there was fake Spell. I have fallen in love with the brand and purchased several things both on here and from the official spell site. Thanks!
Mar 11Reply

mabelleboheme
@alohaanniecruz you should be able to open an eBay case to be able to return. Make sure you open a 'fake/replica' case and take lots of photos for the case. Try to use pics of what an authentic tag, etc to compare for your case. I've been fighting this seller on eBay for what seems like forever ... (ebay ID: gabriellawy). And yeah, she will straight up lie.
Mar 15Reply

the_liza_lova
@iamgeni @mabelleboheme Thanks so much for the info! I didn't know this was happening (I avoid FB like the plague lol). Wondering if you guys could help me out and tell me if this kimono on evil bay is a fake. It's the pink wild horses kimono and seller is boholife. The font on the size tag looks like it's not centered. The part that says Spell is right on the right hand side edge.
Jun 01Reply

iamgeni
@the_liza_lova Hi! According to the comparisons I have seen, it does have all of the characteristics of the real kimono. I do believe it is the real thing. Sometimes the logo isn't centered on the tag, but that usually isn't an indication of a fake. You should be fine! 😘
Jun 01Reply

mabelleboheme
@the_liza_lova I haven't looked at the pictures/listing yet but "theboholife" is very known to sell fakes (she is "mkenney" on this Poshmark)... I wouldn't buy from her.
Jun 01Reply

the_liza_lova
@iamgeni Thank you so much! You are seriously the best!!! Will be on the hunt for fake spell on here to report as well and will share your posts. You're so very thoughtful!😊💖✌
Jun 01Reply

iamgeni
@mabelleboheme @the_liza_lova Definitely true, but she does usually label those as "Cast your spell with this..." in the title, rather than labeling as Spell. She sells the real thing, too. Often, sadly, it's an item she purchased for much, much less with intent to resell at a high value, but those items are usually authentic.
Jun 01Reply

the_liza_lova
@iamgeni @mabelleboheme Ooooooh, I've seen her on here and seen a lot of people get mad at her. She tried to sell my friend Spell for $250ish that she bought for $50. To me it's one thing if it pulls at your heart strings to let it go, but another to nickel and dime people just to turn around and flip for 200% profit. Thank you both for the heads up!!!!!!
Jun 01Reply

iamgeni
@the_liza_lova @mabelleboheme Yep, that's definitely her!
Jun 01Reply

mabelleboheme
@the_liza_lova @iamgeni Yes Geni, she does sell some real Spell and she has taken to selling the really bad knock offs as "cast your Spell..." BUT I know gor a fact that she was selling fake Oliva gowns and GD gowns (before people had caught on that there are fakes) and she sold a fake Panther to me. And she is/was doing it knowingly. So I wouldn't put it past her to be selling fake WH kimonos too (since it isnt widely known yet that there are hard to tell fakes out)
Jun 01Reply

iamgeni
@mabelleboheme @the_liza_lova Oh, that's right! There have been so many fraudulent sellers here, I can't keep track of who has done what. Probably best to avoid, and just not send any $$ her way to support her in any way, real or not.
Jun 01Reply

mabelleboheme
@the_liza_lova @iamgeni I noticed recently that she no longer has any available listings in her closet. I think she has burned a lot of bridges here. I'm sure she's still around though ... just have to figure out her new user ID 😉
Jun 01Reply

mabelleboheme
@iamgeni That's how I feel about it Geni ... I can't in good consciousness support her. Even If she DOES have something I've been wanting... I refuse to purchase from her. 😬😉
Jun 01Reply

the_liza_lova
@mabelleboheme @iamgeni I def am not supporting her! Thanks to your guys' help. Was going to buy it for my friend as a baby shower gift bc she has two others, so doesn't really need any actual baby items lol. Thank you guys so much again!! And I'm so sorry you got sold a fake Panther. I hope you got your money back! Don't know how those people sleep at night😡

erinkist
@iamgeni thanks for the post! I have seen some fakes floating around but usually they're so badly done you can tell right off hand..But these look real! 😩 I went ahead and joined your group you mentioned, and now while I wait to be accepted and quietly freak out (lol), have you heard about any fakes on the wild horses kimono? I just bought one on €b¤y, and was pretty comfortable until now. Looks like she's posted a second one, so I'm starting to feel a little uncomfortable. Listed as "tina830".
Jun 10Reply

iamgeni
@erinkist Hi! Happy to help. 💘 Yes, recently some fake kimonos in the blush color have surfaced. 😭 Once you are in the group, if you search you will see the comparison photos. I will check out the eBay one for you...
Jun 10Reply

iamgeni
@erinkist I think you may be okay... the most noticeable characteristics of a fake are a thin neckline band and light outlines around the horses and flowers.
Jun 10Reply

erinkist
@iamgeni I really appreciate it. Thank you for taking the time.... It looks like she has a paradiso gown listed that may also be fraudulent from what I can tell from your photos and the lace on the bottom. I feel really dumb right now and I really hope I'm freaking out over nothing. This was my supposed to be thirtieth birthday present to myself. 😞😞

Thank you for this post! I have fallen in love with spell recently. Everything listed has been purchased directly or from an authorized retailer on Spell's site, but I recently purchased two (not listed) older, second hand items and I have a few questions, I was hoping you might be able to answer:anywhere I can find pics of older item tags? Do all garments have rn#, even older ones? Has the tag design changed at all? Now thinking maybe I should add tag pics to my listings...
Jul 08Reply

iamgeni
@masters854 Hi! I definitely recommend joining the Spell Fake Identification page on Facebook. There are a ton of comparison photos there, tags included, and a large community of girls who can post photos to compare your items to. I believe the RN numbers weren't added until 2016. For the most part, the look of the size and care tags have stayed the same. Their really early stuff had completely different tags. Hope that helps! xo
Jul 08Reply

masters854
@iamgeni Thanks! I requested to join and that info really helps. I was kind of freaking out for a minute, but I think I am good. The few things I purchased second hand came from one of the Facebook bss pages, so I felt pretty okay about it, but I definitely feel better now. Thanks!

@iamgeni Hi again, it’s been awhile since I have needed your help😬. I have a kimono I want to list on here but I want to make sure it’s the real deal before I do so. How can I tell if a wild horses kimono in blush is real? I purchased off of eBay. Also, are there folktown kimonos in turquoise in circulation? Thanks iamgeni😊
Apr 09Reply

iamgeni
@marisabel82 Hi! Hope things are well with you! The most obvious sign of a fake wild horses kimono is that some of the horses will have their noses tucked behind the flowers. There are some folk Town replicas out there, but they are not usually tagged as Spell. And folk Town is always made in Indonesia, not china, so that's another thing to check on the care tag. 😘
Apr 09Reply

iamgeni
@pamela19511230 No, that is correct for both. The lining of the lotus jacket is polyester, and babushka was made in China.

Apr 24Reply

iamgeni
@wesleytong9290 Hi! Thank you! The kimonos are usually replicas, rather than fakes. They won’t have spell tags. Does yours have tags? If so, and they say “made in Indonesia” on the back, you should be fine. And Pamela meant the lotus jacket in her comment, not babushka. 😘❤️

@blue_anemone The BEST WAY TO KNOW if a SPELL item is a FAKE IS TO GOOGLE “SPELL DESIGN COUNTERFEIT ITEMS” ❗️❗️❗️
You’ll get a list right from SPELL DESIGN ❣️❗️❗️❗️
I personally noticed a few contradictions from the FB Fake Spell Group. They are very helpful overall though.
Jul 01Reply

iamgeni
@celibrate @blue_anemone Actually, that’s not true. Their list is very misleading. It includes items for which their stock photos have been falsely used but not necessarily items that have high quality fakes in circulation.
Jul 01Reply

celibrate
@iamgeni I have found all to be counterfeit whether they are high quality or low quality. Been in bed for 4 months this year and researched every piece ❗️ Counterfeit encompasses all non Spell Design made whether cheap or or actually having a fake “Spell” tag. A new slew of recent Counterfeits just hit EBay in the last 2 days including the last drop on May 15th even. I wrote to Spell Design recently about all the brand new counterfeits.
Jul 03Reply

celibrate
Never underestimate these Evil Counterfeiters. Would you pay $425 for an Xanadu Maxi Dress missing the beautiful birds head and body and just showing the rump of the bird? Also the intricate details of the print don’t match at all. I check the Counterfeit sites so I don’t get screwed paying big bucks for a counterfeit.
Could you please tell me what items Spell Design are misrepresenting and I’ll find the Counterfeit 😃❗️

@iamgeni hi again, I have another question for you. Only because I’m not finding too much helpful info online. I recently purchased a Turquoise Folktown Kimono and something in my gut says it’s fake. Tags and everything look real but it says it’s 100% rayon. I checked on google and found one that said it’s 100% viscose. Is there any other way to tell if it is?
Aug 17Reply

blue_anemone
@iamgeni I’m looking at buying the red and white HP strappy dress or skirt. How do you spot a fake of it? Is is the wing detail like the blue version? I cannot tell differences in your pics above. Thank you!
Aug 25Reply

starlight31
Copying a brand and stealing there name is wrong. The people that do that are dishonest. But there is a difference. I bought a spell knockoff (replica or whatever you wanna call it) that didn't advertise it was spell and the pattern was a little different. The material was 100% viscose and the quality was great. I don't see the logic in spending $300 on a dress I could buy for $20 that is almost the same. I don't have that kind of money to waste either.
Sep 26Reply

starlight31
I understand the manufacturing practices may not be ideal however many things we purchase on a daily basis come from the same type of manufacturing and all benefit the workers that make these things. I appreciate designers and their work as I am one in my own right.
Sep 26Reply

starlight31
I don't condone stealing their work but knockoffs (not counterfeits) products are a big percentage of the retail market, have been and always will be. Which I think can be a good thing for many people that can't afford to pay designer prices.
Sep 26Reply

blue_anemone
@iamgeni Hoping you can help me again...I just received a Folktown Boho dress pink color. The material seems pretty nice, but the size tag says made in China not Indonesia? There is also no material tag. Was this color and all of these FT Boho made in Indonesia? Thank you for your help.
Nov 02Reply

iamgeni
@blue_anemone Hi! Yes, the folk town boho maxi dresses were all made in Indonesia. 😭 Another way to tell is that the row of flowers under the bust will be cut off. If you post a photo I can take a look for you. 💕

Such an important warning, thank you! I'm not new to fakes but I'm new to Spell and got taken right away when I bought a fake Elle gown on another site. Apr 13Reply

iamgeni
@ashleylong85 Hi! According to the Facebook group, there aren’t any fakes of the jet gown. Only copies, and the copies are usually a horrible shower curtain type fabric. If it has a spell tag and care label, you should be safe! 💕💕💕

Oh dear. I feel a bit nervous. I recently bought quite a bit of spell on here and definitely didn’t look at all the tags. Does posh have any kind of buyer protection if something isn’t authentic? I feel confident in a couple of things but the Jasmine pants and crop top, amethyst jumpsuit and seashell midi. Anything I can look for in the patterns on those?
Apr 25Reply

iamgeni
@amandawatkin955 Hi! It’s so sad that we have to check authenticity, isn’t it? 😭 Since you have several items, I really think you should join the Spell Fake Identification Facebook group - there’s so much info to search there with photo examples so you can be sure. Poshmark usually sides with the buyer, so if you can send proof that something was misrepresented, they will usually let you return or give you a refund. ❤️

Hi. This might be a stupid question but do all spell items have a black thread with the spell label attached with the tags? Someone said that if the thread is white then it’s not real. Someone on eBay is selling a folktown dress for a lot and it has white thread without the plastic spell label attached to it.
Jun 08Reply

iamgeni
@cococasanova Hi! Older spell items like folk town would have a longer narrow white hang tag with a white cord - usually just attached with a safety pin. There are other ways to tell if folk town is fake though - is the listing still up for me to go see it?

@iamgeni So I’m a longtime spell collector and have many unicorn pieces. Do you know if anyone has done a side by side comparison of the Unicorn tears recut compared to the original Hotel Paradiso?
When UT came out I purchased a backup of the black HP maxi dress and ended up selling it. However I noticed slight fabric weight and print differences between the two as I have the original HP maxi, the HP kimono, the bluebird maxi, and the bluebird castaway skirt.
