This is a beautifully illustrated vintage children's book with dozens of nursery rhymes, written in Germany in 1941. Sadly, as the author's note indicates, the book could not be published in 1941 because of the ongoing war (which eventually became WWII), with shortages and instability all around. The book was not actually published until 10 years later, in 1951.
The rhymes are funny and endearing, and even after 70/80 years, the style of the language seems a little archaic. Language evolves quickly!
This book clearly was owned by a child who loved it, and it has some minor condition issues. The first page is torn, and on one page (shown), the original owner tried to improve upon the illustrations with watercolor. Otherwise, all pages are intact and the book is well-loved but remains absolutely adorable.
Authored by Paula Walendy; Illustrated by Marianne Schneegans.
Though Paula Walendy (1902 - 1991) wrote over 40 children's books during her lifetime, only one remains in print (Der Liederbaum, or "The Song Tree").
The title page bears the inscription "Meiner lieben Winni zum 4. Gerburtstag, Dein leiber Opa" (For my dear Winni's 4th birthday, Love Grandpa)
Measures 9 by 6.5 inches, with 76 pages
