An Orthoceras is an extinct genus of nautiloid cephalopods that lived during the Paleozoic era, particularly from the Ordovician to the Triassic period. These marine creatures had long, straight, conical shells divided into multiple chambers. The living animal occupied the outermost chamber, while the others were used for buoyancy control through a structure called a siphuncle. Orthoceras are commonly found as fossils, often in limestone, and their long, slender shells can be quite striking, sometimes polished and used in jewelry or decorative items. They are among the most recognizable and abundant fossils of ancient marine life.
