Orpheus, a musician with a divine gift, married Eurydice, but on their wedding day, she was bitten by a snake and died. Distraught with grief, Orpheus descended into the underworld where Hades and Persephone gave him permission to lead Eurydice back to the mortal world, as long as Orpheus never looked back. But near the earth’s rim, Orpheus looked behind for Eurydice, who murmured a final farewell before dying again. From then on, Orpheus wandered the earth in despair, spurning the advances of all other women. Some of these rejected women killed him and threw his body and his lyre into the river.
