The story of Apache Tears is a legend connected to the Apache people and a type of volcanic glass called obsidian, found in the southwestern United States. The legend says that during a battle between Apache warriors and the U.S. Cavalry in 1870 near Superior, Arizona, outnumbered Apache warriors chose to ride their horses off a cliff rather than surrender. Their families, upon hearing of the tragedy, wept, and their tears turned into the black, obsidian stones now known as Apache Tears.
