It is a type of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of silica, and is used in jewelry, making it a gem. It also falls under the broader category of stones, which are aggregates of minerals. Obsidian is formed as lava from volcanic eruptions cools within the earth. The speed at which it cools prevents crystallization and the rock forms as solid volcanic glass.
