This is a rare serving ladle by FRANKOMA Art Pottery. This ladle was originally sold with the FRANKOMA 245 Soup Tureen/Bean Pot. The color is a dark navy blue.
The clay used to make the ladle is called sapulpa clay. Sapulpa clay is a red clay and you can see the color when you look at the bottom, unglazed portion of the ladle. This ladle was probably made in the 1950s. It measures 11” long x 4-1/4” in diameter. It has a nice built in “spoon rest” on the bottom that keeps the ladle from tipping to the side when it is placed on a flat surface. This ladle is in excellent, pre-owned condition with no damage. There are no chips, cracks, or crazing. Anything in the photos that looks like damage is only a reflection.
HISTORY: Frankoma Pottery (1933-2010) was an American pottery company located in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. Frankoma was founded by John Frank. The name Frankoma was created from Frank’s last name and the last three letters of the state of Oklahoma. The company was widely known for its sculptures and dinnerware although the company made many other products including figurines, trivets, and vases. All Frankoma pottery was made in the United States from locally dug clay.
