The orange color derives from manganese, while the addition of traces of iron produce a redder color. Most spessartites, especially orange ones, have eye-visible inclusions. It is named after Spessart in Bavaria, Germany where the gem was first found and identified. Nearly all garnets are of mixed types. Pure spessartine is relatively rare.
