The small loop comes to work when the leash is attached. When your pooch pulls, the collar tightens and will stay snug around your dog's neck without choking the dog. It will also prevent the dog from slipping out of the collar, thus preventing escape. Martingale collars are helpful for training, they are gentler than any choke collar or even regular buckle collar, they make it hard for your dog to slip free and they are stylish!!
