The album is largely performed in a quiet folk and country style. It features backing harmonies by Nicolette Larson (who had her own hit with Youngs' 'Lotta Love' later in the year) and additional accompaniment by musicians from Harvest (1972 album). 'Comes a Time' peaked at #7 on the Billboard 200. The album spawned one single, the albums' only song not written by Young, 'Four Strong Winds', a Canadian folk song by Ian and Sylvia.
