mariasant @vintageblackcat Hi. It is heavy. I’m going to a jeweler when I have a chance. Thanks

mariasant @vintageblackcat It is Baltic amber from Poland. Purchased in Budapest. It has little items in the amber. No insects though. I’ve heard that the insects in the amber make it more valuable (Caribbean amber may have the insects). I noticed you have a gorgeous amber necklace for sale. The older gentleman I purchased this necklace from was selling a second necklace that looked like Russian amber - wish I had purchased that one also 😢. How do I test for Bakelite amber? Thanks

mariasant @vintageblackcat I read that 1/3 cup salt with 2/3 water. Dissolve the salt and let it cool. Then see if it floats. Is that what u suggest also? I just listed this 2 days ago. Thanks

rmccouture Hi Maria! This is a lovely necklace, whether it's amber or bakelite! The easiest, least invasive way to check if it's amber is to run it under hot water for a bit. It won't hurt the necklace. Just run it under the hottest water you can for about 5 minutes, and then smell it. Amber is solidified tree sap, and it smells sweet. Bakelite was made with formaldehyde, and has a distinct chemical smell when it's run under water (cont)

rmccouture You could try floating it. Amber floats in salt water (as you mentioned above). I would do 4 parts salt to 1 part water. Make sure your bowl is large enough to accommodate the necklace with extra space, and make sure the salt is completely melted in the water. Sometimes it's difficult to float amber necklaces because of the weight of the sting/clasp. It looks like this necklace doesn't have a clasp though, so unless whatever it's strung on is really heavy, the necklace should float (cont)

rmccouture One more non-evasive method you could try is getting a UV blacklight (they sell them at pet stores (cat urine shows up under blacklight, believe it or not!) Amber changes color under blacklight. It usually looks blueish, but can look other colors as well. This isn't a sure-fire test, as some plastics also change color under blacklight, but it will rule out most other substances used to mimic amber. (cont)

rmccouture You can also do a static test. Amber will become static-prone when rubbed. Wrap it in a cloth and then rub it for some time (20-60 seconds), then hold it near a strand of hair. If the hair is attracted to the necklace, it means that static was produced and most likely you are holding real Amber.(cont)

rmccouture The question regarding weight is an important one for several reasons; the most important being that the heavier the amber, the more value it has. I strongly suggest picking up a shipping scale (or food scale that is large enough to place pieces of jewelry on). They're inexpensive, helpful for more reasons than just weighing amber. (cont)

rmccouture People like to know the gram weight of precious metals as well. You have some sterling in your closet, and knowing the weight can help you price what you are selling. The heavier the sterling, the more it is worth. It's an important tool to have in your house for a variety of reasons. (cont)

rmccouture You might also want to order a jar of Simichrome. Simichrome is a great metal polish, so if for no other reason, you can use it for that, but it also can test Bakelite. No test is 100%, however most Bakelite pieces, when rubbed with Simichrome, will turn the pink paste a tobacco yellow color. Again, it's not 100%, but it's worked for me most of the time. (cont)

rmccouture One more piece of advice (I am assuming that you were asking for my advice in the comment you left in my closet, even though you didn't specifically say so!) Take some close-up photos of the beads. Place them so the light is shining behind them, and you can get a good shot of what's inside of them. Make sure to post more than 1 photo to show that each bead is different from the next. Amber necklaces are never perfect; bead sizing, coloring, inclusions should be different in each bead. (cont)

rmccouture Hopefully this info was helpful and what you were looking for! By the way, if you purchased this necklace in Poland, it IS Baltic Amber! Poland is on the Baltic Sea, and the amber washes up on its shore! It is considered a Baltic country because it's on the Baltic Sea, and most of the amber from there is Baltic. Please let me know if you have any other questions! ❤️Amanda

mariasant @rmccouture You are AMAZING and so thorough. I am going to a jeweler later this week but am sure he/she will not be as knowledgeable as all the info you gave me. I tried the salt water but ran out of salt bc this necklace is so large. I am going to try Gulf of Mexico saltwater but that may not have the correct amount of salt. You are the sweetest for giving such detail on your response. Thanks ❤️

mariasant @vintageblackcat You have amazing pieces !! The gemologist suggested I cut some beads and do the salt water test. I ran the necklace under hot water and it smelled sweet (like honey).

mariasant
mariasant @vintageblackcat I agree. I told the gemologist that the necklace would have to be restrung if I cut it. It is already strung nicely. Anyway...

mariasant @vintageblackcat Hi. You are the artist that made Amanda’s checkerboard lucite bangle? No wonder you have such amazing pieces for sale. I love the necklace you have for sale with the Bakelite rose and blue stones on the chain. Did you make that one? Sorry, that may be info you may not want to share. If you have a store, I would love to visit it (and do some serious drooling). You are very talented. 😍

mariasant @nguyenjulie1975 Hi. Yes, I took the necklace to 2 jewelers; the 2 said it is amber. Also , when I run it under hot water it smells sweet not like synthetic smell of acrylic. The larger rectangles have inclusions( as can be seen in the pics). Thanks
