Melvin fell off a bicycle and he couldn't stand! He needed medical care, Surgery for Fracture! An ambulance was requested to come from the Capital city 6 hours away - hadn't arrived I'm 3 days' time! Life in Liberia is not what we know it as in developed countries! Liberia has only 11 Pediatricians for 2 million children! Can you imagine not getting a child to medical evaluation because you lack the money to even ask they be seen? Look at this child - he never whimpered - but instead smiled - when his tooth was knocked out by a soccer ball. As an RN with Pediatric experience, I can tell you you cannot keep a child down unless what they're going through is overwhelming! And as someone who's had a fractured femur I can tell you the pain is excruciating! He couldn't stand, couldn't weight bear, which are the signs of fracture. The best care available is Doctors Without Borders in Monrovia, the Capital. Melvin & an adult who can remain with him needed to get to get there as soon as possible! He couldn't endure the 6+ hour drive w/o ambulance as he was likely to go into Shock. Melvin eventually got to the hospital where he remained for weeks as he healed. bbbabe3715 I'd been in touch with a ministry over the holiday weekend trying to arrange to fly Melvin to Monrovia & was awaiting hearing regarding scheduling. In the interim there was a meeting of the Town Elders to discuss how they could assist. Eliana reports the local ACFI Church in Zwedru has assumed responsibility for Melvin's care and he'll return to the Orphanage when he's well. (ACFI is the African Christian Fellowship International: website indicates their headquarter office is in Lancaster, SC.

bbbabe3715 Melvin's been transferred from local care to Jackson F Doe Memorial Hospital Liberia's Second largest Teaching Hospital, (206 beds), located in Tappita City, Nimba County. It's a Referral Hospital, which indicates it is Tertiary Care, the highest level in a Health Care system. As a Teaching Hospital, it's staffed by Specialist Physicians who teach Resident Physicians and would have better technology than other hospitals. This is an answer to our prayers. Please continue to pray for Melvin. <3

bbbabe3715 Many thanks to the Pastor of the local ACFI Church who was able to arrange for Melvin to receive this level of care. It's difficult for those of us in the industrial world to imagine the difficulties of navigating care in a nation which is impoverished and consequently health care availability is marginal. The Pastor's promised to keep Eliana appraised of Melvin's progress. At this time it's anticipated Melvin will be hospitalized at Jackson F. Doe for a week. Thank you for your loving prayers!

bbbabe3715 @skynyrd98 Melvin is one of the children I sponsor. Health care infrastructure is so non-existent it took a week to get him hospitalized 300 miles away from the Orphanage. Can s y of us imagine the pain of a child waiting who's a week for medical care for a broken leg?

bbbabe3715 @bonichtoni This was a recent emergency - it took a week to get Melvin who's leg was broken to medical care: a hospital 200 miles away! Can you imagine a child at home for a week with the PAIN of a broken leg?!!! The local "doctor" was treating him with leaves on the fracture - I was frantic to try to help get him to care, messaging Drs w/o Borders, anyone who might help little Marvin! Thankfully, assistance finally emerged - he is well healed and at home in Orphanage w Prosper & other friends

bbbabe3715 @ginagranata an example how difficult it is there - little Melvin had a broken leg a WEEK before we got him to a hospital 200 miles away! Can you imagine the pain he was in? The local "doctor" was treating his broken leg with the application of leaves...So hard to imagine a child suffering like that.
