Matisse 1953 Speckled Green Enamel Necklace
This is one of the earliest and seldom seen Matisse necklace, circa 1953. The earrings of these early sets were signed (earrings not included but reference why the necklace wasn't Signed); the necklaces were not. Nine links of U-shaped enamel pieces are linked with copper tubes. The enamel's base is light green speckled over with a deep forest green.
Necklace measures 18-1/2 inches (extension chain included).
Note of Interest: In 1946, Fels established Renoir of California, in Los Angeles, specializing in coppery jewelry using geometric abstract forms. Following on this success he opened Matisse Ltd. in 1952. Like Renoir, Matisse jewelry was made of copper, but had the added sparkle of enamel decoration. Both businesses continued to grow throughout the 50s and at one point employed about 300 people.
