Hi there, so from armpit to armpit, the jacket is exactly 21 inches. Yes, there is side entry on the lower pockets, but I wouldn’t put items in them because they would fall right out of the pockets, because the opening is from top to bottom, if that makes sense..so you could easily stick your hands in them. If you want to put small items in the pockets, you could use the flap pocket in the front, which is functional and snaps down securely. Hope that helps!
