'Bat Out of Hell' is the debut studio album by American rock singer Meat Loaf and composer Jim Steinman. The album was developed from the musical 'Neverland', a futuristic rock version of Peter Pan, which Steinman wrote for a workshop in 1974. It was recorded during 1975–1976 at various studios, including Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, New York. The album was produced by contributing guitarist Todd Rundgren and released in October 1977 by Cleveland International/Epic Records.
Although 'Bat Out of Hell' was not an immediate hit in the US and reviews were initially mixed, it would eventually peak at #14 on the Billboard 200.
Three of the albums' singles released in the US made it to the Top-40: 'You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth' reached #39, 'Two Out of Three Ain't Bad' spent 23 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #11 while 'Paradise by the Dashboard Light' floated to #39. Although the title track 'Bat Out of Hell' charted higher in other countries, it has since become a staple of classic rock radio and streaming platforms.
The album has been included on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 greatest albums of all time" and has been certified multi-platinum in six countries, including 14× in the US.
