Virgil Abloh’s Spring 2021 collection, staged in Shanghai, China, unveiled a playful reinterpretation of the Maison’s roots. Debuting atop a shipping barge amidst the pandemic, the designer wrestled with intense quarantine measures to immerse viewers in an animated, cartoon world. Working remotely, Abloh and the Parisian team stayed put, shipping the garments by themselves to be received by Vuitton’s Eastern craftsmen. Upon arrival, massive inflatable characters encompassed the catwalk, projecting “the world through the untainted vision of a child, not yet spoiled by societal programming.” 3D plush dolls were embellished to sweaters and lapels, reinterpreted with a variety of prints and massively oversized accessories. The palette, complete with tradition Ghanaian prints and abstract colours imagined the world through rose tint, looking through youthful eyes. In tradition of Abloh’s reign, we as viewers were invited to indulge in a euphoric world, full of curiosity and nuance.
First showcased in the 96th of 119 looks, this Intarsia sweater features a lively take on the traditional clock face. Replacing numbers with ‘LV’ branding, a red second hand provides a stark contrast to the neutral base tone. Also placed on the back, we’re reminded of our limited, fleeting time to experience, grow, and create.
