The Standing Liberty Silver Quarter was first struck in 1916. The design by famed sculptor Hermon A. MacNeil was selected in a competition and was part of the movement inspired by President Theodore Roosevelt to create more beautiful and distinctive American coins. The design shows Liberty standing with a shield (symbolizing defense) in one hand and an olive branch (symbolizing peace) in the other. The reverse of the coin shows a dramatic eagle in flight. The coin was short-lived and last appeared in 1930. It was replaced with the Washington Silver Quarter in 1932 to honor the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth. (No Quarters were made in 1931.) The obverse of the Washington Quarter depicts a portrait of Washington by sculptor John Flanagan. It was based on a bust by Jean Antoine Houdon that was created during Washington's lifetime. This set includes the coveted and rarely-seen last Standing Liberty Silver Quarter (1930) and first Washington Silver Quarter (1932). Both coins were struck in 90% silver.
