The name is derived from the Latin word “Lapis” meaning stone and the Persian word “lāzaward” meaning sky or heavens. In ancient times, Lapis Lazuli was incorrectly called Sapphire or the Latin word Sapphirus. The highest quality deposits are found in the Sar-e-Sand deposit in the Hindu Kush Mountains of Afghanistan's Kochka River Valley. It is important to note that unlike most minerals, Lapis Lazuli is found within caves and not traditional mines. Today, it is considered by some to be an aid to balancing the brow chakra (which influences vision and hearing).
