Labrador Nurse
by B. J. Banfill
B. J. Banfill was born on a farm near Richmond, Quebec, Canada, and studied nursing at Sherbrooke Hospital. In 1928 she made her first tour of duty with the Grenfell Mission at Labrador. After a year, she returned to take a missionary course a the United Church Training School in Toronto. In 1933 Miss Banfill opened the new W.M.S. Hospital at Smeaton, Saskatchewan, and later served the Indian Residential School at Ahousaht, British Columbia. In 1935, while she was doing pioneer nursing in the West, Miss Banfill received a medal from King George V. In 1942 she returned to the Labrador Mission and suffered a serious back injury when thrown from a dog-team, thus preventing her from doing full-time work. Miss Banfill lives in Avonmore, Ontario, and still serves in her chosen profession with tireless energy.
