MARDI GRAS HISTORY
The first Mardi Gras in New Orleans is thought to have taken place about 1733 when the settlement of nouvelle Orleans was in its infancy. The first remembrances of Mardi Gras probably closely resembled those in France, the birthplace of the cities founders. By 1766 when Spain took control of the town, Mardi Gras was in a sketchy, the well established custom, there was little semblance to order at Mardi Gras until the first formal parade took place in 1838. In those early years, Mardi Gras had all the noise and color of today's event, but it was not until 1838 that New Orleans saw its first formal parade. Since 1838 the Mardi Gras parades have been held every year except for war years.
