Almost immediately after the United States entered World War II in late 1941, nickel became an important strategic metal. It was vital in the production of guns, tanks, airplanes, and other wartime goods. Nickel was also a major component in five-cent coins. the free up nickel for the war effort, the U.S. Mint searched for a replacement metal. The alloy that most closely matched the previous coins in terms of color, weight, and electrical resistance proved to be on that included 35% silver. The first Silver Nickels were made in October 1942 and continued to be struck through the end of World War II in 1945. This three-piece circulated set of First Silver Nickels is dated between 1942-1945, and includes on e with each Mint Mark - Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco. The set comes on an informative mount with certificate of authenticity, and packaged in a vinyl sleeve.
