That is how all skin care products are, the expiration starts after the first use. Since this is sealed and has not been exposed to oxygen, it is good for 12 months after the first time it is opened. And yes, this is a special size only exclusive to Kate Somerville, not sold in stores. The 2oz you see at Sephora retails at $85, and this 1.7oz retails at $75. Hope this info helps! 😊
