The album prominently features Dee Palmer's string orchestration across an eclectic musical set, with the band members playing a multitude of instruments. The music is light and whimsical, with hints of comedic lyrics and wry structure, although the lyrics still unleash lashing critiques of established society. 'War Child' reached #2 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart. The two singles released from the album were 'Bungle in the Jungle,' which reached #12 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and 'Skating Away on the Thin Ice of the New Day,' which reached #75 on the Cashbox charts in the US. Despite its limited chart success, the latter received substantial FM airplay and remains in active rotation on classic rock radio and streaming platforms playlists.
