Single Pen and Ink Art Print, with original signature by the artist James E. Coyle. Matted and framed with glass in solid wood frame, in excellent condition. Scene of 1970's Helena, Montana - the Broadwater Natatorium (torn down in 1974 after sustaining earthquake damage). Fantastic example of Montana history! print measures about 9x12 inches.
J. E. Coyle was a professional artist in Sandy, UT starting in the 1970s. He was basically self taught, gradually developing his own style over the years. He focused on pen and ink drawings of buildings, locomotives and ghost towns. The Broadwater Hotel and Natatorium would have been long left empty at the time he drew them, being torn down soon afterwards. The Broadwater was built in the heyday of Helena's gold rush fortune in the late 1800's as a lavish resort by Colonel Charles Broadwater. It stood as a symbol of Helena’s wealth and Montana’s progressiveness. Built with an investment of $500,000, these structures were designed in the Moorish Spanish architectural style. When the Broadwater Natatorium premiered in August 1889, it was the largest natural hot water plunge in the world. However, Colonel Broadwater died just a few years after the opening, and the hotel closed its doors before the end of the century.
