Illusions Perdues II
by Honore de Balzac
with Notice de Patrick Berthier
French Edition
Inspired by Balzac's experience in printing, Lost Illusions tells the story of the failure of Lucien de Rubempré, a young provincial in love with literary glory. As a counterpoint to the unfortunate career of this "great man of the provinces", alternately hero and antihero full of weaknesses, the story evokes the models of virtue that are Lucien's family and the "Cenacle", an intellectual circle of "truly great men". The "lost illusions" are Lucien's illusions in the face of the literary world and his own destiny, but also those of his family in the young man's abilities and human qualities. A metaphysical reflection on the meaning of a society and an era placed, between cynicism and melancholy, under the sign of loss and disillusionment.
