rayquyen @pakainin Hi Joni, How was the MFA at De La Salle University? I attended Antioch University LA mainly because of the social justice emphasis and the proximity to San Diego (I could drive up for the residencies and would even come home in the middle of a residency to see my family). We worked with 2 week residencies in summer/winter and small genre groups led by a writing mentor in between. Overall, it was a pretty good experience. -- Ray

pakainin @rayquyen Sorry for the super late reply. I went to DLSU in Manila, Philippines, where I grew up. (I immigrated to the US fairly recently.) I'm not sure how similar MFA programs are in the US. We would have writing courses like Poetry Writing Techniques, Fiction Writing Techniques, Playwriting Techniques; then these would be followed by their workshop counterparts (e.g. Poetry Writing Workshop, etc.) where we would be writing that particular genre for the whole term and getting workshopped...

pakainin ...by both the teacher (usually someone also known in that genre) and classmates, and at the end of the term, an off-campus workshop will be held with invited writers. And then there were other courses we all had to take no matter what genre we choose to write in like a class in Literary Criticism, Translation, Creative Non-Fiction, etc. After finishing all these course work, we had to take a comprehensive exam which will depend on one's chosen genre. So for example for me, my questions were...

pakainin ...all fiction-related (techniques, history, criticism, etc.) and one take-home creative writing test. After passing that, we move on to the thesis which is a book-length manuscript of "publishable quality." So for me as a fiction writer, I got to choose whether to write a compilation of short stories or a novel. We would then defend our thesis proposal, work on the thesis for years, then defend the actual thesis. Then we graduate.

pakainin It was pretty intense. I started in January 2001 and graduated in October 2010--mainly because it took me such a long time to finish my thesis/novel--and so much self-doubts in between. But yes, I'm glad I went through all that when I still could. I have no time for anything anymore now that I have a kid.

pakainin I hardly write anything these days so sometimes it feels like I can't write anymore. I hope to get back to it once life settles down some (which never really happens; I know, I know). How long does an MFA in the US usually take? And does it also require a book-length thesis?

rayquyen @pakainin The MFA at Antioch LA structure is a 2 year program (2011 to 2013 for me), 5 residencies of 2 weeks duration, reading and annotating 40 books, mentoring with a published writer in between residencies in a small genre group, a social justice experience, a formal reading of your own work, a 25 page critical analysis paper in MLA format, a teaching experience, and a 100 page compilation of your writing. It was also very intense and I certainly experienced my share of self-doubts.

rayquyen @pakainin Writing can be a blessing and a curse, and I have gone through periods where I stopped writing altogether. I'm at a life stage now where I want to use writing to make some type of difference in the world. I am also a parent though our children are in their later teens now. I think if I had to choose writing vs parenting, hands down being a parent is more important, so don't be too hard on yourself. You'll pick up the pen or keyboard again when the time is right.

rayquyen @artooteatoo Hi K! Happy Holidays and thanks for the like! I just finished "Chasing Fireflies" by Charles Martin and I'm starting to read "The Queen's Gambit" by Walter Tevis. I began writing this memoir in 1996 and finally published it w/ a small university press in 2014. The book will take you to Hong Kong & I would recommend it for readers of character driven stories. -- Ray
