- All gold jewelry has other metals in it (even solid 14k and 18k gold), because gold is too soft for jewelry on its own. This means that all gold jewelry is prone to tarnishing. While gold itself does not tarnish, the other metals will tarnish when exposed to air and/or humidity (for example - try to avoid leaving it out in the bathroom where there is a lot of humidity every day from the shower).
- Because of the potential for tarnishing, I recommend keeping your jewelry in airtight storage...or at least in some container that shuts out air. Even velvet stacking trays can work if you put the jewelry in one of the bottom layers and make sure there are no "gaps" between the trays that let in a lot of air.
- When you're not storing jewelry, wear it often and feel free to touch it! The oils from a person's skin will stop it from coming into contact with the air and therefore will stop tarnishing. I recommend you avoid getting any perfumes or stronger scented products on it, but a tiny, trace amount of unscented hand lotion or pure coconut oil is usually fine...and will sometimes actually help to prevent contact with air due to more oils coating the jewelry.
- If it does tarnish, you can use a delicate gold jewelry cleaner, like CONNOISSEURS Delicate Jewelry Cleaner, and a soft cloth or very soft toothbrush (one for an infant) to clean it.
- Ultrasonic cleaning devices can damage some crystals; therefore, I don't recommend using them.
