Originating in Mexico City in the 1930s, the art form became popular in Oaxaca, where artisans carve them from copal wood. Alebrijes are believed to be spirit guides or protectors. They are hand-carved and painted with intricate designs. The vibrant colors and patterns are characteristic of Oaxacan folk art. These carvings are popular among art collectors worldwide. They are traditionally used in "ofrendas" (offerings) on El Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Measures appx 5” x 2.5”
