Thomas Gibbons Hawkes, an Irish immigrant founded the Hawkes Company in Corning, New York in 1880. In less than 10 years, Hawkes won the Grand Prize for cut glass at the Paris Exposition Universelle, which brought the American glass industry and Corning, New York, to the attention of the world. Corning became known as the "Crystal City".
It is hard to imagine that every facet on this spectacular two handled bowl was cut by hand. To hold a Hawkes creation is to hold a work of art. The bowl measures 6.75 inches from handle to handle and 2.5 inches tall. The Hawkes logo is acid etched on one of the few places not faceted and the bowl is in excellent condition for its age (over 100 years) except for a few small scratches (see photo of logo).
