Vintage green crackle glass was made by adding uranium to glass and then using a process that created cracks in the glass. Uranium Glassmakers added small amounts of uranium to glass to create green or yellow glass. The uranium was usually in the form of uranium dioxide (\(UO_{2}\)). The amount of uranium added varied from trace amounts to about 2% by weight. Some 20th-century pieces contained up to 25% uranium. Glass that contains uranium glows bright green under an ultraviolet (UV) or "black" light. Crackle The glass was made molten hot and then submerged in cold water, which caused the glass to crack. The glass was then reheated to seal the cracks and smooth the glass. The cracks remain in the glass, giving it a "crackled" finish.
