About the Author
Gore Vidal was born in 1925 at the United States Military Academy, West Point, where his father was the first avaition instructor. When he was seventeen, he enlisted in the army, and while on night watch on a ship, he wrote his first novel, Williwaw, which was published in 1946.
Vidal's early works include "The City and the Pillar" (1948), two successful Brodway Plays, and a number of plays for television's "golden age" as well as Hollywood screenplays
In the sixties, three widely praised novels established Vidal's reputation as a bestselling author: Julian (1964), Washington, D.C. (1967), and Myra Breckinridge (1968). He is the author of twenty-two novels, including the acclaimed multivolumen fictional chronicles of American History: Burr (1973), Lincoln (1984), 1876 (1976), Empire (1987), Hollywood (1990), and Washington, D.C. He has published several volumes of essays, and in 1993, the collection United States: Essays 1952-1992 won the National Book Award.
