Offered is a beautiful porcelain figure by Goebel. It is Tranquility by noted Canadian artist Helen Granger Young. The piece is of the Madonna cradling her Child. It measures 10.5 inches and about 6.5" wide. It is signed with the impressed signature of Helen Granger Young and is also signed and dated in ink. Part of the ink signature has faded. The piece is in good condition without any chips or cracks.
Helen Granger Young was born in Mimico, Ontario, Canada in the early 1920s. She graduated from the Ontario College of Art where she studied sculpture under Charles Fraser Comfort and Franklin Carmichael. During the 1940s she worked as an art instructor while doing commercial art for two of Canada’s leading retailers, Eaton’s and Hudson’s Bay. During WWII, she created technical drawings of military vehicles and aircraft. After the war ended, Helen moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she began to create sculptures in porcelain and in bronze. Her work in porcelain, included pieces she designed for Cybis during the 1970s.
In 1979, she signed an exclusive agreement with Goebel to design for them. The pieces were produced at the Goebel of North America studio/factory in Pennington, New Jersey.
