This is a very elegant brown felt wide brim fedora from the 1940's. The low crown is a small conical shape surrounded by a grosgrain edged wide brim. The brim is turned up and shaped so one eye is semi covered.at the front. There is an array of yellow and rust feathers to finish this fashionable look. There is an elastic attached at the back to hold the hat in a tilted position.
Tilt hats were popular in the 1930s and 1940s. They were worn at an angle and held to the back of the head by a strap, rigid ring, elastic band beneath the hair, or a combination of these. The wartime 40’s saw a huge variety of hats that were suitable for any face shape, hairstyle or personal preference. Throughout the war & on both sides of the Atlantic, elaborate creations brightened dreary utility fashions, brought about by rationing. The only items not rationed were hat materials. Explosions of feathers, veiling & artificial flowers were popular.
