This very stylish 1930s' black felt hat is a round, flat crown which is indented at the top. There is a black felt strap to hold the hat in a tilted position. One side of the strap is trimmed with two felt "flowers". There was a technique used in millinery of the era in which pieces of felt were heavily starched and pressed in special molds to mimic flower petals. The hat look is finished with a black veil, which can cover the face or placed on top towards the bak of the head. Tilt hats were popular in the 1930s and 1940s. They were worn at an angle and held to the back of the head by a strap, rigid ring, elastic band beneath the hair, or a combination of these. There is no label, indicating it was a custom-made creation. This hat is in wonderful vintage condition and has been lovingly preserved among over 1300 vintage hats we have collected for 40+ years. emilywalternos 2 questions: what is the circumferece of the base and can the flowers easily be detached w/o it being obvious? Or made less prominent--they seem inappropriate for a funeral!

lanu11 @Emilywalternos Hello and thank you for looking at our beloved vintage treasures. The circumference of this tilt hat is about 19 1/2 ". The felt flowers seem to be easily removed because they are stitched with thread onto the hat. The veil is attached in the middle of the back side, and then the 2 edges are attached on top of the flowers, so after removing the flowers, you could reattach the veil easily onto the hat.
