This is a gorgeous Gorham Manufacturing Co. sterling silver repousse and cut crystal hair receiver vanity jar. The Gorham mark includes: GMCo., an anchor, a lion, and M. The anchor signifies Rhode Island, where it was made, the lion signifies 925 Sterling silver, and “M” which is the letter code for the year 1880. The jar is in excellent antique condition. There are no dents, scratches or heavy wear on the lid. There are a couple of pinholes in the lid which can only be seen from the inside when held up to a bright light. The cut crystal jar is excellent with no nicks, cracks or scratches. It is 3” in diameter and 2 1/2” tall. This lovely Gorham hair receiver belonged to my Great grandmother who was born in Quebec in 1862. It may have been a wedding gift, or for her 18th birthday. What a beautiful wedding gift this would be for a beloved daughter or granddaughter. This beautiful and unusual hair receiver would be the crown jewel on any dresser or dressing table. The picture of my great grandmother is on the front of a post card.

fairviewcat Thanks, the women in my mom's family had quite an interesting life. So, I guess I have kept that tradition alive.

fairviewcat Thank you, I am planning on listing my grandmother's sterling dresser set which is also beautiful. It is a slightly newer set, Arte Nouveau, from turn of the last century.
