GOODELL BROTHERS DOUBLE SPIRAL SHAFT SCREWDRIVER 1897

It is a reversible automatic screwdriver. You hold the bushing at the front, and when you pull the handle back and push it in, the screw advances. If you tighten one of the lower collars and loosen the other, then the action of the screwdriver is reversed. This was one of the first reversible automatic screwdrivers, predating the spring-loaded "Yankee screwdriver" that was popular up through the 60's.
