Made by Frank Valdez, a veteran artist from Taos, New Mexico. This belt is completely made by hand and one of a kind. Materials are sterling silver, copper, turquoise and leather. One buckle and nine conchos with Frank’s fine stamped designs into sterling silver, inlaid turquoise and thread onto a hand made leather belt. My husband and I purchased this on a trip to Sante Fe and Taos maybe 30 years ago. Francoise, the shop in Taos, I believe is no longer there. This is such a beautiful belt - we have it laying on a side table in our bedroom, displayed as a piece of art.
The leather belt is 41” long x 1 1/4” wide with 5 holes. Conchos: 3 1/4x2 1/2. The buckle is slightly larger. Excellent condition. Weight:1.4 lbs.
About the artist - Valdez started assisting Duane Hopper in the 70’s - Duane, a highly respected maker of concho belts. He then continued to make his own jewelry, developing his individual techniques and stylistic approach. Since his jewelry is made completely by hand, no two pieces are ever alike. He is known for the fine stamping, small turquoise or coral stones and antique finish he uses on many of his pieces. His work can be found in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC.
