Buttery yellow scarf with Jamdani artisan loom work in green, blue & primary yellow on 100% Indian fine cotton muslin.
20-1/2" x 75"
Handwoven with the finest Bengali muslins by master weavers at a Fair Trade cooperative in the West Bengali village of Phulia, India, and brought to the US market by a Berkeley-based Fair Trade Federation member, Rover & Kin.
Rover & Kin is a proudly AAPI woman-owned brand that grew from Koraa, a neighborhood fair trade shop in Berkeley, CA. Their small team is guided by Koraa founders Wen and Jampa’s decade plus experience of collaboration with craft communities in South Asia.
Jamdani is one of the most artful and time and labor-intensive forms of hand loom weaving. It is the most expensive hand loomed textile since it requires the most lengthy and dedicated work. A fine muslin textile, Jamdani is believed to be a fusion of the ancient cloth-making techniques of Bengal (possibly 2,000 years old) with the muslins produced by Bengali Muslims since the 14th century.
There are many ancient textile weaving centers in the Bengal region of India, such as Phulia, and the craft of Jamdani has been experiencing a revival, after being on the verge of shutting down in previous years. The overall recent rise of craft revival in India and internationally has helped preserved this industry. In 2013, the traditional art of Jamdani was declared a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
