This unique folk art frog doll is a rare find, created by textile artist Penelope Torkington in 1992. It was purchased at the KPFA Art Fair in Berkeley, California. It is signed by the artist and numbered 4/50. Made from high-quality fabric textiles, the body is made from hardened fabric. It features a beautifully sewn ruffled dress and apron in soft pastel colors with intricate details. This is an original piece of art and is perfect for collectors of dolls or vintage arts and crafts, this one-of-a-kind piece is sure to impress.
Condition: This has been a shelf sitter in a glass cabinet since the 1990's and the fabric shows some slight fading. There appears to be a crack in the acrylic of one of the eyes (see detailed photo) but paint is intact and in place. Otherwise, the piece is in good condition without chips, obvious flaws, or rips in fabric.
Art dolls, as a distinct category, emerged in the 20th century, building on a long history of doll-making that spans from ancient times to the industrial era. While dolls have always served as toys and cultural artifacts, art dolls distinguish themselves through their focus on artistic expression, craftsmanship, and often, a departure from purely functional or commercial purposes. Please see pictures for further description as they are a big part of the description.
