This is an outstanding example of the high fashions of the 1950s'! The hat is made of teal felt, which has been manufactured so that the outside of the brim is smooth felt, and the rest of the hat is "shaggy"...please see photographs. This hat is quite a showstopper! The crown is very small and flat at the top, and the brim is very large and turned down at the edges. Around the crown there is a narrow grosgrain band that ends in 2 bows at the back. At the sides of the crown the grosgrain band is trimmed gold sequins. in a rectangular shape. There is an elastic band attached to the inside of the hat to keep it in place. This hat resembles the hat that Lucille Ball wore in an episode that takes place in London.
Post war 1940’s and 1950’s saw many women choosing not to wear hats on a regular basis. To preserve its market, the millinery industry set about creating variety and extravagance. Generally speaking hats remained small and close to the head. They were now touted as the essential accessory to complete the ensemble. Alternatively, ‘pancake’, ‘mushroom’ or ‘cart wheel’ hats sat flat atop the head reviving turn of the century styles.
