This hat is a collector's dream, as it typifies the 1950s' cartwheel hats, but this one is very special because of its construction. The large oval shaped stiff brim is covered in navy velvet underneath, and its top is creatively covered with a very narrowly pleated taffeta-like material. Visible from the top are narrow velvet cording with two velvet bows. The navy half veil finishes the look, and there is a matching hatpin ending in a piece of matching velvet.
Throughout the 1950s, ladies wore hats daily as a part of their attire as was a pair of gloves.
Post war 1940’s and 1950’s saw many women choosing not to wear hats on a regular basis. To preserve its market, the millinery industry set about creating variety and extravagance. Generally speaking hats remained small and close to the head. They were now touted as the essential accessory to complete the ensemble. Alternatively, ‘pancake’ or ‘cart wheel’ hats sat flat atop the head reviving turn of the century styles.
There is no label, indicating it is a custom-made creation.
This hat is in wonderful vintage condition and has been lovingly preserved among over 1300 vintage hats we have collected for 40+ years. Please note that the flat crown is made of stiff material, which has creased near the middle, but it does not detract from its beauty and creativity.
