In 1958 one of the most famous men in the world, Elvis Presley, was drafted into the U.S. Army.
Elvis was proud to fulfill his military duty. When he arrived at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas in March of that year; he didn't expect any special treatment. Elvis became Private U.S. 53310761, had his trademark sideburns shaved and received seven dollars to tide him over until payday.
His down-to-earth attitude quickly won the admiration of his fellow soldiers. Elvis Presley returned to civilian life (and legions of eager fans) in March of 1960.
The hard work and dignity he had demonstrated during his military service proved that this rock and roller loved his country as much as he loved his music.
