Eggplant ca 1990 Blue Gray Glazed Pottery Robert Foris featuring Rounded Shape Leafy Top 13.5 inches tall 11.5 inches diameter at Bottom of Base Lid: 3.5 inches tall Rick Foris is known for wheel thrown raku-fired sculptural constructions. Based on a vessel form these sculptures incorporate hand built elements including a base or plinth, handles, and finials. Each sculpture is a unique combination of elements. Surface techniques take advantage of the raku fired surface coloration which may include localized white or other glazed areas. The post-firing cold application of acrylic paints creates bold patterns and color contrasts. In addition both stamping and carving may be employed. Foris has been active in craft-fairs throughout his career and has also received multiple awards, including best in show at the Des Moines Iowa Art Festival, awards of excellence at Lakefront.
